  • Develops and coordinates the Livingston Parish Library programming for adults, emphasizing services that respond to adult needs and interests.    
  • Supervises a parish-wide adult services package, catering to individuals aged 18 and above.
  • Acts as a liaison between the library and parish/state groups, organizations to coordinate services for Livingston Parish residents.
  • Coordinates adult services projects, displays, information handouts, etc. for the library system.
  • Acts as a representative of the library to the public.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops system-wide programs, services and promotions for adults in the libraries and for those who use the library’s electronic resources. Develops and maintains library’s presence in the community.
  • Supervises all Adult Programming offered by the Livingston Parish Library, both programs planned by the Adult Services department and by library branch locations.
  • Works in cooperation with the head of Youth Services to develop services and programs sponsored by both departments. Also works cooperatively to suggest changes/updates to the Library’s policies and procedures as needed.
  • Plans, manages, and implements new projects and programs to completion, within budget and deadline; revises and adjusts existing projects and programs to meet objectives; multi-tasks and effectively coordinates a variety of concurrent projects and activities.
  • Recommends materials purchases for adult services programming.
  • Assists in maintaining and updating staff manuals, forms, procedures, policies, etc. in related areas.
  • Assists administration on special projects.
  • Prepares bibliographies, brochures, etc. when appropriate.
  • Acts as a selector and recommends materials purchases for the library’s collection to Collection Development librarian.
  • Coordinates intergenerational programs and/or activities with appropriate personnel as warranted.
  • Coordinates activities with Public Relations Manager regarding graphics, artwork, and flyers for Special Events, Programs, etc.
  • Coordinates with Public Relations Manager in preparing newspaper and radio announcements, captioned photography, etc.
  • Responsible for communicating with branch supervisors/librarians and/or coordinators regarding related services, programming, projects, etc.
  • Represents Livingston Parish Library in a professional manner. Uses diplomacy and tact to establish and maintain effective working relationships and collaborative partnerships with managers and supervisors, employees, representatives of other governmental agencies, contractors, diverse populations, and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Works individually in a self-directed manner and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Effectively participates with a team orientation including developing and implementing programs and materials.
  • Regularly assesses and updates recurring library programming to ensure it continues to match the library’s mission and vision.
  • Other duties as assigned by the administration.



  • Manages publicity, outreach, and literacy departments to make sure they continue to develop and stay in line with the changing needs of the library and the community.
  • Supervises positions: Programming Assistant (co-manages) and Adult Literacy Specialist.
  • Manages the publicity department, including social media, print and broadcast media, making sure all aspects of library services are continuously promoted.
  • Manages the new adult literacy department and takes steps to make the department grow.



The position develops programs and services to fulfill the Adult Services Plan that affect the entire organization. The position solves problems that may have an impact across the entire library system. The position frequently encounters new and varied work situations. Decisions are typically made within general organizational policy constraints and guidelines. The position involves a high degree of complexity, the ability to implement and facilitate programs across the entire library system, and interaction with a large number of people. The position operates independently with a minimum of supervision.


The position does not include mentoring responsibility, but takes a leadership role in modeling and promoting library values across the organization and as a representative of the organization in the community.


Education, Skills and/or Work Experience Requirements

  • A Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school. One year of progressively responsible experience in a public library with some reference experience.
  • Working knowledge of modern library policies and procedures, methods, practices and materials; Knowledge of basic reference sources and research techniques; Knowledge of database and online reference sources; Internet; computer applications and library system software.
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, social media sites, and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and Publisher.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams.
  • Self-directed, self-motivated; ability to develop and follow the adult services department’s long-term and short-term goals; department’s goals must always align with the library’s long range plan.
  • Ability to follow instruction and directions as set by the library’s administration. Exceptional professional ethics and discipline.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Capable of designing creative solutions to program requirements.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of programs, materials, and staff.
  • Organizing and prioritizing multiple projects and tasks.
  • Use of independent judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to plan, organize and facilitate meetings.
  • Effective, clear, and persuasive oral and written communications to a variety of individuals and groups including public presentations.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and gain cooperation among competing interest groups.
  • Excellent skills in office computer software.
  • Speaks, reads, writes and understands the English language.

  • Valid Louisiana driver’s license
